The secret about Northern Michigan is out.

The starting gun goes off on Memorial Day and with families returning from all corners of the country the population quickly triples by The 4th of July.

Three summer months go by in a blink but the crowds linger thru October as the north wood’s leaves put on its annual show of reds, orange and yellow.

And then it begins to slow..sure there is skiing, sledding, and the occasional distant roar of a snowmobile but more often than not, by mid winter in Northern Michigan there is silence.

Peter Zumthor, an architect far more talented than myself, once said “Buildings can have a beautiful silence.”

I think about this often.

How do you create architecture that is bold enough to capture the explosion of the summer sunset meeting Lake Michigan while also being quiet enough to match the silence of the mid winter woods after a fresh snowfall?
